Question:

 

Some farmers give their cows wine to drink in order to improve the quality of their meat. Is it permissible to eat the meat of such cows?

 

Answer:

 

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

 

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

 

In principle, it is permissible to eat the meat of a cow that was given wine to drink, although it is makrooh tanzeehi to do so if the cow was slaughtered immediately after it drank wine. If it was not slaughtered immediately after it drank wine but later on, then it is not makrooh at all to eat its meat.[1]

[1]  في الدر المختار: (ولو سقي ما يؤكل لحمه خمرا فذبح من ساعته حل أكله ويكره). وقال الشامي: (قوله حل أكله ويكره) ظاهره أن الكراهة تحريمية، وعليه ينظر ما الفرق بينه وبين الجلالة التي تأكل النجاسة وغيرها والجدي اهــ. وفي تقريرات الرافعي: قوله (ظاهره أن الكراهة تحريمية) بحمل الكراهة على التنزنهية – وإن أُطلقت هنا – يزول توقف المحشي في الفرق. ويظهر أن قوله (من ساعته) ليس احترازيا بل ليفيد أن الحكم كذالك بعده بالأولى. نعم الكراهة إنما تتحقق فيما إذا أكل من ساعته ( ج 9 ص 563 ط دار المعرفة )
