Question:

Is there a ruling stating that it is disliked or makruh for men to wear the colour red? In terms of clothing for men, what are the permissibilities and impermissibilities (e.g. against Sunnah)? What is the most appropriate/preferred? Jazakumullah Khayr.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

It is permissible for men to wear clothes that fulfil the following conditions:

  • It should cover his aurah (from the navel upto and including the knees) properly
  • It should not be made of silk
  • It should not be dyed with safflower or saffron
  • It should not have pictures of humans and animals
  • It should not be so long that it exceeds the ankles
  • It should not be clothes that are worn by women
  • It should not be clothes that are exclusively worn by the non-Muslims or the irreligious and sinful people

It is, however, preferable to wear clothes that are worn by the pious and righteous Muslims.
