giving azan at home then at masjid

Question:

One man gives azaan at home and prays sunnah then he goes to the masjid and gives azaan there as well, he’s a muazzin there. Is it okay for him to do so? What would be the best option for this person? Should he carry on in this manner or should he stop giving azaan in one of the places? His home and masjid are in different suburbs.

Answer:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيْم

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Azan is sunnah mu’akkadah for the fardh salats, not for other salats, including the sunnah salats (such as the four rak’ats sunnah before the Zuhr salat). Therefore, if someone has intention to pray sunnah at home and fardh in the masjid, he should not give azan at home. If, on the other hand, he has the intention to pray the fardh salat at home (due to some valid excuse), then he should give azan.

Based on the above, the brother in question should offer sunnah salat at home without azan, then he should give azan in the masjid.

في الدر المختار: وهو [ أي الأذان ] سنة للرجال في مكان عال (مؤكدة) هي كالواجب في لحوق الإثم (للفرائض) الخمس (في وقتها ولو قضاء) لأنه سنة للصلاة حتى يبرد به لا للوقت (لا) يسن (لغيرها) كعيد إلخ وفي الشامي: (قوله: كعيد) أي ووتر وجنازة وكسوف واستسقاء وتراويح وسنن رواتب إلخ ( رد المحتار: 2/ 63 ط دار المعرفة )

وليس لغير الصلوات الخمس والجمعة نحو السنن والوتر والتطوعات والتراويح والعيدين أذان ولا إقامة كذا في المحيط ( الفتاوى الهندية: 1/ 59 ط العلمية )
