taking pain killer while fasting

Question:

I suffer from severe headaches when I fast. The pain is unbearable especially in the afternoon. Is it permissible to drink a pain killer and then continue with my fast? I have seen a doctor but found nothing wrong. JazakAllah.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Taking pain killer orally will break one’s fast. Taking an injection in the vein or muscle, however, does not break the fast. You may want to speak to a doctor about using pain killer injection.
