Is it permissible to drink kava (yagona)?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

It is makrooh tahreemi (i.e. prohibited and sinful) to drink kava.[1]  This is also the view of Hazrat Mufti Ebrahim Desai sahib. For details, click on the following link:

[1] The Australian government has done extensive research on the effects of drinking kava. The research shows that kava consumption has some short term benefits and many long term harms; and that the long term harms outweigh the short term benefits.

The research also shows that apart from negatively impacting the consumer’s health, kava consumption also causes apathy – due to which the person becomes indifferent to and negligent of his responsibilities.

Due to the negative effects of kava consumption, the Australian government has placed restrictions on buying and selling kava in Australia.
