I have a question regarding how does the zakat obligation applies to our superannuation savings which we cannot access until the age of retirement. As you know, superannuation contribution is compulsory saving and it accumulates with time. Currently i am not paying any zakat on my superannuation savings as i cannot access it.
My question is when i am able to access it on retirement, do i have to pay the zakat for all the previous years or one year after i could take the money out?
Some people are of the opinion that because we do not have complete ownership of the money in the sense that we could not take it out to pay our zakat on a yearly basis, then we are only obligated to pay zakat on the amount left one year after we can take the superannuation money out. If one has been working for 20 - 30 years, the accumulated zakat if it has to be calculated on the yearly basis is definitely going to be many more times than if it has to be calculated on the lowest balance one year after it could be withdrawn. I appreciate if you can give your fatwa or opinion on this matter.
If I buy a car from auction and then sell it to a private owner, how do I calculate a zakat on it? For example, if I buy a car for $1500 and then sell it for $2300, how much zakat do I need to pay?

Anyway, i still like to know whether I could give some of my zakat to her without her knowledge that it is my zakat contribution.
During the recent floods which hit Fiji (January and April of 2012), everyone was affected. The floods were indiscriminate - i.e., they affected Hindu, Muslim and Christian in the same way.
If you have been to Fiji, you would be aware that most settlements are of mixed composition (with the exception of traditional Fijian villages). You would also be aware that communities live in peaceful co-existence on the ground level.
Let's say, in a settlement of 20 families, you have 6 Christian, 8 Hindu and, 6 Muslim who are living in a peaceful manner as far as religion is concerned. They all respect each other as far as their faiths is concerned. And when the flood hit the settlement, it hit all the families alike.
My question is:
Is it permissible to use Zakaat funds to help these non-muslims who have been affected by the floods as well?

I am finding it confusing on which price our Zakat is supposed to be based on. As an example, Zakat has become compulsory on me. Now, I had bought this gold from the shop for $50. And if, for example, now I sell it, the price will obviously go down. So for instance I will be selling it for $40 to the gold shop owner.
Me question is: will I be paying Zakat on the $50 (the price I bought it for from the shop) or is it on the $40 (the price I am selling it for)?
